Harnett earned a B.A. in biochemistry from Lafayette College in 1998. Following graduation, he attended the Tuck Business Bridge Program at Dartmouth College and received an executive education certificate. Harnett worked in finance, venture capital, real estate, and executive recruitment before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2005 to work for U.S. Bank as a financial analyst.

In 2011, Harnett founded Success Mastery Leadership LLC, an organization that aims to enable “positive, progressive, and energetically-motivated leaders become extraordinary in their leadership.” Through the organization, Harnett works as a motivational speaker, writer, and teacher to help businesses and individuals realize personal and professional achievement.

Harnett was a registered Democrat until he switched to the Republican Party in 2010. He assisted Republican Christopher Hailey in his 2010 race for sheriff in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and began working with the Republican Party of North Carolina (NCGOP) to improve minority outreach. Harnett was selected as a fellow with the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership in 2011 and earned a certificate in political leadership in 2012. He went on to work as campaign manager during Vince Coakley’s 2014 bid for North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District.

Harnett was elected chair of the NCGOP in June 2015. He defeated Craig Collins, the candidate favored by Governor of North Carolina Pat McCrory and Republican leaders in the state. Harnett’s campaign platform focused on local party development and grassroots engagement. As the NCGOP’s first black chairman, Harnett aimed to improve the party’s minority outreach.
