Haywood Commissioners may block emissions removal

I need your help.

If you live in Haywood County and you are tired of wasting your time and money on vehicle emissions inspections, call and email Haywood County Commissioners to tell them.

Commissioners can be reached at:

If you agree with me that emissions testing is nothing more than another tax on the elderly with fixed incomes, middle and low income families and every other Haywood County driver, stand up and speak out to your Commissioners. We can get a provision to remove Haywood County from the list of counties required to perform emissions testing added to a bill this week, but only with your help and Commissioners’ support.

I believe emissions testing is pointless because:

  • If a driver spends at least $200 while trying to make vehicle repairs to pass emissions inspections, he or she can get a waiver and not have to pass emissions inspections at all. If you can just buy your way out of emissions inspections, WHAT’S THE POINT?
  • If your car is model year 1995 or older, it does not have to pass emissions testing at all. Given older cars generally have poorer emissions than newer ones and they’re precluded from emissions testing entirely, WHAT’S THE POINT?
  • The North Carolina Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ) performed a study in which they recommended 31 counties for removal from emissions testing requirements – including Haywood County. If removal of Haywood, along with 30 other counties, keeps North Carolina well below federal ozone standards, WHAT’S THE POINT?
  • 17 states do not require any vehicle emissions inspections whatsoever. They manage to stay below federally mandated ozone standards (even high-population states, such as Florida), so WHAT’S THE POINT?

Emissions inspections are a money grab. If the requirement for Haywood County residents to get their vehicles inspected for emissions were removed, nothing would stop people from getting their cars inspected if they chose to do so. Forcing people to spend their hard-earned, limited resources on emissions inspections year after year, though, is wrong.

If you agree, please contact Haywood County Commissioners yourself and tell everyone you know to contact them as well. Also, please share this message with everyone you know in Haywood County. Commissioners’ support is needed to move forward with removing emissions inspections from Haywood County.

Comment: Two out of five Commissioners own businesses that make money doing inspections.  No conflict of interest there, right?

  1. Thank you it is a waste of time and it’s my understanding that Rogers and Sortells both have emissions inspectons stations and I don’t think they should be able to vote if they do wouldn’t that be conflict of interest.

  2. If you don’t like having clean air, you should try living in China were millions are dying from air pollution. There should be responsibilities associated with owning, maintaining and driving a vehicle. It is not a “right” to do so!

If I follow your logic, people with broken cars won’t fix them if not required to test them.
These wonderful Republicans should give up their salaries and pensions if they want to save us money.

    1. “If you don’t like having clean air”… LMAO

So sorry you didn’t take the time to *read* the article.

Please do read it, and then come back and explain how we need emissions inspection in Haywood County.

    2. “These wonderful Republicans should give up their salaries and pensions if they want to save us money.”

Clearly, math isn’t your strong suit.

    3. Biil, meet math.

Salaries for *all* Senators and Congressman total roughly $94 million. Some simple math reveals that this is 2/100 of 1% of the federal budget, and $0.28 per American.

I am sure they will have a big time on that $0.28.

  3. We need thus emmission test stop we shouldnt have to have it done. Haywood County does things to jyst get money and it need ti stop.

  4. I am opposed to doing away with emissions tests. Being in the medical field, sometimes the only way poor air quality is noted in a car is actually from such a test. And I want the air quality here to remain good quality. One of the big economic drives in our area is tourism. We need to protect all of our natural resources in this area including our air quality. I applaud Rep. Presnell looking out for ways to protect our pocketbooks. Decrease in sales tax?

    1. Yes! I agree with 100%. Statistics show that chronic lung problems plague the older population of Haywood County. If you listen to a scanner, there are more calls for breathing problems than most other calls combined. Tell me again why we shouldn’t fight to have clean air? This is just another case where Michelle Presnell is putting her nose where it doesn’t belong! She constantly accuses the County Commissioners of getting kickbacks and looking for ways to extort tax money from the citizens, but wait, these fees don’t go to the county, thy are state taxes! Isn’t that her group getting the revenue???? It’s interesting that she points out 2 commissioners have inspection stations. Do the research, the stations only receive a small portion of the fee. And who put these emission requirements on Haywood County to begin with? Was it the commissioners? NO! It was state legislators like Michelle Presnell looking to bolster the state coffers! Funny how easy it is to point the finger at someone else without looking at your own house first!
